In the Igloo with Iggy Igloo

Greetings!
Iggy Igloo here, I host a show called Planet Groove every Tuesday on KRCC and make music around the area on my own. I was born and raised in
Colorado Springs and currently reside in Manitou Springs, where I’ve spent the last few years. I’ll be writing a column here about the things I see, the people I meet, and what I’ve been up to!
I remember when I was a young boy living in Deerfield Hills my family would come downtown a couple times a week for church, I was so fascinated by the lights and bustle of the city center! Still to this day I find great joy in wandering the streets gazing at the sights of our fair city.
After I turned eighteen I was feeling disillusioned and ended up living on the streets with a severe alcohol and drug addiction. I spent my days in Acacia Park and vicinity honing my people skills in the search for booze and my nights I spent looking for out of the way places to sleep where I wouldn’t get in trouble, though plenty came my way. I learned some tough lessons and am blessed to have made it through the experience for I know many folks who didn’t.
When I turned twenty one I had a son in Cincinnati which gave me the best reason to better myself and kick started me down the road to recovery. It took a few years to get a handle on it but as of now I have six and a half years of sobriety under my belt and I am so much better without those chains! After I stopped drinking I decided to set what seemed to be an astronomical life goal, something great to work for to distract me from my past and keep me moving forward. I gave it a lot of thought and decided I wanted to have a radio show, both my grandfathers were radio operators and I had gotten my amateur license at fifteen though it had long expired. I also remember watching Wolfman Jack in the movie American Graffiti and thinking he was the coolest dude ever!
Once I had my dream in place in my mind I told my friends and coworkers about it in order to find ways to accomplish it, eventually Rachel told me about the volunteer dj classes at KRCC so I rode my bike to the station and signed up. Six months later they contacted me about the class so I went to the station and learned the ropes of our local NPR affiliate and eventually my mock show was good enough to be put on the substitute list to fill in for the dj’s that wanted the evening off. The first song I played on the radio was Bela Fleck & the Flecktones version of the Star Spangled Banner! After a year or so of filling in for people and getting used to the controls I was offered Planet Groove which has been a huge part of my (and hopefully your) life ever since!
I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you and until next time I will say “Love your life, love your music, love your family!”

p.s. I’ll be playing songs at Swirl Wine Bar in Manitou Springs this Friday (2-12-16) from 7-10pm and there’s no cover!!!
